Why Cultivar groups?

Over the last years many new hybrids are raised and brought into culture, these ' New ' ones are always listed in our catalogue under 'NEW'.   But for the first time we now can use in some cases 'Cultivar Groups', where we can find rather new Saxifrages wich come from the same parents.

For example the Saxifraga Blues Group, established for all hybrids of aretioides x lilacina x media x poluniniana = x poluanglica x lowndesi.  Cultivars in this Group so far;'Louis Armstrong', 'Elvis Presley', 'Gina Lollobrigida', 'William Shakespear', all raised by Jan Burgel and Oldrich Maixner.   So these cultivars all arose from the same cross, and in the future you can find such group names in catalogues and on labels.

Ofcourse most of the new cultivars wich have not been descriped until now and do not belong to such a group are still listed in the section 'New Cultivars'.

Not only Jan Burgel and Oldrich Maixner brought us new cultivars wich do fit in a group, also Malcom Mc.Gregor with for example the Vanessa Group, and the late Sergio Bacci with the Toscana group, and in the future years maybe more groups will be established.

So in this edition of The Alpigena List you will find some groups and there cultivars for the first time listed.   Take note that it's possible that cultivars in former catalogues listed as 'New', now are placed in 'their' group.   And also keep in mind that there are more groups, but not listed here, because the plants are not yet available at The Alpigena Nursery.

 Warm-purple

For several years now this true fine colored cv.,is doing well just outside in our garden,it needs some shade on the hottest hours in summertime, but no special requirements in winter, nice hard cushion, real eyecathcher in full flower!

Pink,deeper at base

Closer to 'Winifred',doing good outside ,but seems to like a bit more humus rich soil, like 'Beatles'a stunning new plant with a 'aaaahhh'color!

Deep-red

'Tvuj Uspech' x lowndesi, beautiful 'dark' flowercolor!,not so difficult as said to be,give a rather sheltered spot with enough shade on hottest hours, better outside than in Alpine-house,but give winterprotection.

'Elvis Presley'

*

3,00

Purple

For several years now without winterprotection,so stronger as said to be,but maybe safer to give some WP,bit more well gritty humus rich soil. This is an exceptional Sax when in flower, the ultimate 'eye-catcher',with a big 'oooh' and 'aaah' rate. Highly in demand never enough in stock, but it's possible you are lucky.

 Pink

lowndesi x 'Tvuj Uspech, very nice into wich can grow rather fast and with a lovely flower color. Give a bit more shady spot and a moist position, not to much sun in summer like all the Blues Group Saxes.

 'Gina lolobrigida'

 3,00

 Light warm-pink

'Tvuj Pritel' x lowndesi, nice color, well flowering. Doing rather well outside here without winterprotection, but to much winter wet can give problems.

 'Satchmo'

3,00

Deep-pink

Bit more care, some sheltered spot and in winter maybe best with overhead protection. I think better than Louis Armstrong in color and appearance,'Satchmo'was the nickname of L.Armstrong.

Strange name for a nice Sax,give rather cool, moist, shady position but enough light.  Does not like Alpine House culture,so in the Rockgarden and maybe rain/snow cover in autumn.winter.  Eye-catching flower color. Worth to grow!

'Marilyn Monroe'

Rather soft cushion, not to much sun,bit sheltered spot, needs like 'Cio-Cio' open air around,so better in the open garden with winterprotection.
